The social media reach checklist

Twenty settings and habits — five per platform — that actually move the needle on views, reach and likes for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. Built for social media marketers, agencies and anyone posting content who wants real numbers behind their strategy, not guesswork.

Managing this for clients? SlideoClip generates and schedules posts across all four platforms from one dashboard, with this same checklist built in as a per-account tracker.

Instagram

Instagram’s 2026 algorithm weighs watch time and shares far above likes — these settings and habits feed both.

  1. 1.Switch to a Professional account (Creator or Business)

Unlocks reach, saves and completion-rate analytics, and routes your content to the right audience by category.

    How to do it

    1. Open your profile → tap the ☰ menu (top right) → "Settings and activity"
    2. Tap "Account type and tools"
    3. Tap "Switch to professional account" and follow the prompts
    4. Choose Creator or Business, then pick the category that best matches your content
  2. 2.Turn off "Use Less Mobile Data" in Settings

Instagram downranks blurry or compressed uploads — this keeps every post and Reel at full quality.

    How to do it

    1. ☰ menu → "Settings and activity" → "Account"
    2. Tap "Data usage" (or "Cellular data use" on some app versions)
    3. Toggle OFF "Use less mobile data" — this stops Instagram compressing your uploads and previews
  3. 3.Set your content preferences and account category

Instagram recommends your profile to people who already follow similar accounts.

    How to do it

    1. ☰ menu → "Settings and activity" → "Account type and tools" → "Category" — pick the closest match
    2. Then: ☰ menu → "Settings and activity" → "Content preferences" — review and confirm the topics Instagram has tagged you under
  4. 4.Turn on cross-posting to Facebook and Threads

Free extra distribution surface for every post, at no extra effort.

    How to do it

    1. ☰ menu → "Settings and activity" → "Account" → "Sharing to other apps"
    2. Toggle ON "Share to Facebook" and "Share to Threads"
    3. These now apply automatically to new posts/Reels — you can still turn either off per-post before sharing
  5. 5.Optimise for watch time and shares, not likes

Watch time (~35%) and DM shares (~20%) now outweigh likes (~5%) in the ranking algorithm.

    How to do it

    1. Profile → ☰ menu → "Insights" (needs a Professional account, above)
    2. Open any Reel → check "Average watch time" and "Shares" (not just likes)
    3. For your next few posts, design the first 3 seconds to stop the scroll, and end with something worth sending to a friend

Facebook

Facebook has fewer literal toggles left — most of the 2026 algorithm runs on content behaviour, not settings.

  1. 1.Post native video and Reels, not shared links

Native video consistently outperforms shared or external content, and Reels are Facebook’s primary discovery surface.

    How to do it

    1. Meta Business Suite → "Create" → "Reel" or "Video"
    2. Upload the file directly (from your device or SlideoClip library) instead of pasting a YouTube/TikTok/external link
  2. 2.Reply to comments quickly and substantively

Comment-reply speed and quality are real ranking signals in the 2026 algorithm.

    How to do it

    1. Meta Business Suite → "Inbox" → "Comments" tab
    2. Turn on alerts: Settings → Notifications → enable "Comments" push/email
    3. Reply within the first hour where possible, with a real sentence — not just an emoji or "❤️"
  3. 3.Avoid engagement-bait phrasing ("tag a friend", "comment YES")

Meta now actively penalises forced engagement bait instead of rewarding it.

    How to do it

    1. When writing a caption, cut lines like "Tag someone who needs this", "Type YES if you agree", "Share if you're with me"
    2. Replace with a genuine, specific question about the content — e.g. "What would you add to this list?"
  4. 4.Consider running a Group alongside your Page

Groups get materially higher organic distribution than Pages, which average only ~1.6–5.9% reach per post.

    How to do it

    1. Facebook → "Create" → "Group"
    2. In the new Group → Settings → "Linked Pages" → link it to your Page
    3. Cross-post your Page's content into the Group to reach both audiences
  5. 5.Post consistently rather than in bursts

Steady, predictable presence is favoured over spiky posting patterns.

    How to do it

    1. Meta Business Suite → "Planner" → schedule posts ahead at a fixed cadence (e.g. Mon/Wed/Fri)
    2. Or use SlideoClip's own Schedule page to automate a recurring cadence per Brand

LinkedIn

LinkedIn retired the "Creator Mode" toggle in 2024 — reach now comes entirely from behaviour, not a switch.

  1. 1.Don’t hunt for a "Creator Mode" toggle — it was retired in 2024

Its features (content-focused layout, Newsletters, Live, Audio Events) are already built into every profile by default.

    How to do it

    1. Nothing to enable — LinkedIn removed the switch, so don't waste time searching Settings for it
    2. To check what you already have access to: Profile → "Resources" section → Newsletter / LinkedIn Live / Audio Events will appear there once you're eligible
  2. 2.Post at least 3 times a week

LinkedIn’s algorithm now auto-detects creators by consistent contribution, not by a setting.

    How to do it

    1. Start a post → click the clock icon next to "Post" → "Schedule for later" to queue posts ahead of time
    2. Or use SlideoClip's Schedule page to set a recurring 3x/week cadence automatically
  3. 3.Comment thoughtfully on your target audience’s posts

This measurably increases your own visibility to that same audience.

    How to do it

    1. Follow/connect with 10–15 accounts your ideal audience also follows
    2. Spend ~10 minutes a day leaving a specific, substantive comment (not "Great post!") on their recent posts
  4. 4.Be ready to engage in the first ~60 minutes after posting

Early engagement heavily decides a post’s total eventual reach.

    How to do it

    1. Settings (top-right menu → "Settings & Privacy") → "Notifications" → turn on alerts for comments/reactions
    2. Post at a time you can actively watch for the next hour, and reply to every comment as it comes in
  5. 5.Fill out your profile completely (headline, About, featured content)

A complete profile is treated as a stronger trust and relevance signal.

    How to do it

    1. Profile → "Add profile section" → fill in Headline and About
    2. Profile → "Featured" → pin your best post or article
    3. Profile → "Edit public profile & URL" → set a clean custom URL

YouTube

Most creators configure fewer than 4 of the channel settings that actually feed YouTube’s discovery algorithm.

  1. 1.Set channel keywords (Settings → Channel → Basic info)

Keep them consistent across your channel description, playlist titles and video metadata.

    How to do it

    1. YouTube Studio → gear icon (bottom-left "Settings") → "Channel" → "Basic info"
    2. Add relevant search terms in the "Keywords" field, comma-separated
    3. Reuse those same terms in your channel description and playlist titles
  2. 2.Use the Community tab regularly

Community posts now count as an engagement and ranking signal, not just video activity.

    How to do it

    1. YouTube Studio → "Customization" → "Basic info" — confirm the Community tab is enabled (unlocks once your channel meets YouTube's subscriber threshold)
    2. YouTube Studio → "Create" → "Post" → share a poll, image, or update at least once a week
  3. 3.Fill in default upload settings (category, language, license)

Ensures nothing gets missed on individual uploads.

    How to do it

    1. YouTube Studio → "Settings" → "Upload defaults"
    2. Set the default Category, Language and License so every future upload starts correctly filled in
  4. 4.Track Impression CTR and Average View Duration

These are the two strongest predictors of an algorithmic boost.

    How to do it

    1. YouTube Studio → "Analytics" → "Content" tab
    2. Check "Impressions click-through rate" and "Average view duration" weekly
    3. If CTR is under ~4–5%, test a different thumbnail or title on your next few uploads
  5. 5.Keep thumbnails and branding consistent across your channel

Helps YouTube’s "New Viewer Attraction" metric recognise and recommend your channel to new viewers.

    How to do it

    1. YouTube Studio → "Customization" → "Branding" — set your channel banner and watermark once
    2. Reuse the same thumbnail template (font, colours, layout) across every upload so your channel is instantly recognisable

Common questions

Do these settings guarantee more views?

No single setting guarantees anything — platforms weigh hundreds of signals. But these are the ones with the clearest, most consistently reported impact on reach in 2026, verified against each platform’s current public algorithm guidance.

How often should I revisit this list?

Every algorithm here changes multiple times a year. Treat this as a living checklist — re-check it each quarter, not a one-time setup task.

Does content quality matter more than settings?

Yes — settings remove friction, content quality (and consistency) is what actually earns reach. Think of this checklist as clearing the runway, not the plane itself.
